Complete Wooden Lure System

After 30 years of teaching myself to wooden lure making and 10 years of privately teaching a handful of other lure makers, I'm finally sharing what I've learned! I'm creating a strong, vibrant, information sharing lure making community, and I want YOU to be part of it!

Like most people who have mastered the art of wooden lure making, I had to teach myself. There wasn't anyone out there to show me how it was done, and there were very few books that showed how to make lures, other than a few basic crankbaits and topwater lures. I did it the hard way, trial and error. Over the years I've lost count of how many painstaking hours I've spent in my workshop, often late at night, experimenting with techniques, testing ideas and finding solutions to lure making challenges. I have a mountain of dud lures to my name, and learnt a mountain of lessons along the way. Check out Complete Wooden Lure System

My Favorite Guns: The Remington 870

My Favorite Guns: The Remington 870

By: Kelsey Hilderbrand   I received my first gun when I was 3 years old. As a small child, it seemed I was destined for a love of firearms. My grandfather always carried a Remington 870 Wingmaster in the now politically incorrect rifled rack in the back window of the 68 ford pick-up. It was always a thrill to go farming with grandpa and I spent as much time as I could riding along on the machinery. One day, while Pap was talking with our fieldman, I figured out how to work the slide on the 870. It was unloaded but at the age of 3, I knew how it worked and took every advantage to work the action. When Pappy returned to truck, his grandson was standing on the seat, grinning from ear to ear, and working the action of the 870 still in the rack. He looked at me laughing and said, "KR, (my initials and family handle) that gun might as well be yours!" The Remington 870 is the undisputed champion of firearms sales world wide, moving over 9 million models and variations by the end of the 20th century. At the end of WWII, Remington recognized the world of industry was changing. Labor costs were increasing and automation was taking hold. The Remington Model 31 pump action shotgun was one of the identified models as being too expensive to continue production and development for a quality replacement with mass-production potential began. Remington engineers realized they could save money by incorporating currently produced items so they began designing a pump shotgun which utilized parts from the already produced 1187 autoloader. In 1949, Remington announced the discontinuance of the Model 31. Later that year, they announced the production of the 870. In 1950, the first 870's began showing up in retail facilities. Remington knew they had a good product and wanted to capitalize on the economic boom of the middle class in the post war years. Instead of tentatively entering the market with one or two models, Remington launched 15 different variations of the 870 in 12, 16, and 20 gauges. The standard field grade 870 AP was priced at $69.95. Remington wanted to provide the gun for the entire spectrum of the hunting community so Deluxe, Tournament, and skeet grades were also introduced along with a Riot Grade pistol designed to be sold to police and military and compete against the Model 12 Trench Gun. Sales were explosive and Remington quickly began producing even more variations of the 870 to feed market. In 1955, the Magnum versions with 3" chambers were introduced and in 1959, the first rifled slug gun was produced. The Remington 870 provided a perfect combination of affordability and reliability and soon became a favorite of sporting enthusiasts everywhere. Today, the 870 is produced at even higher rates with an even greater diversity of the models, features, and styles. The 870 has become the flagship of the Remington Firearms Company, out pacing the sale and production of all other models of Remington Firearms as well as becoming an icon of the hunting community. It has been challenged time again for the right to be called the most popular shotgun in the world by the likes of the Mossberg 500 and the Benelli Nova but while both have proven to be popular and affordable, neither have been able to rival production and sales. The Remington 870 is the reigning King of the shotgun world and doesn't look to give up its title any time soon. Hunting, Fishing Licenses on sale Aug. 15

AUSTIN — Current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) expire Aug. 31, and new licenses for 2012-2013 will go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 15. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issues about 2.1 million hunting and fishing licenses annually through the agency’s 28 field offices, more than 58 state parks and at over 1,600 retailers across Texas. Licenses may also be purchased online through the TPWD Web site at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/buy or by phone (800-895-4248) with a $5 convenience fee required for each transaction , Call center hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday — Friday. The online transaction system is available 24/7. A transaction receipt may be printed at the time of purchase for online and a confirmation number is provided for phone orders, and the physical license is mailed separately. Confirmation numbers will verify that a license has been purchased, which is sufficient for dove hunting, but will not allow hunters to take fish or wildlife that require a tag.

Dove Hunting Requirements

In addition to a hunting license, all wing shooters will need to purchase a game bird stamp. To hunt dove or teal in September, a Migratory Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required. Duck hunters also need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp and receive HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification. HIP certification involves a brief survey of previous year’s hunting success and is conducted at the time licenses are purchased. Certification will be printed on the license. Lifetime license holders must also be HIP-certified and purchase the Federal Duck Stamp to hunt migratory birds. All other state stamp endorsements are included with a lifetime license. There are other mandatory endorsements to consider at the time of purchase, too. An Upland Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required to hunt all non-migratory game birds, including turkey, quail, pheasant and chachalaca. Of course, anyone who purchases the Super Combo license package, the best bang for the buck at $68, automatically gets these needed stamps. Sportsmen ages 65 and older qualify for a discounted Senior Super Combo for $32. Duck hunters will still need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp.

Big Time Texas Hunts

Also available everywhere licenses are sold are chances for Big Time Texas Hunts. The Big Time Texas Hunts is a very popular Department program that offers hunters the opportunity to enter to win one or more premium guided hunts with food and lodging provided, as well as taxidermy in some cases. The crown jewel of the program is the Texas Grand Slam dream hunt package, which includes four separate hunts for Texas’ most prized big game animals — the desert bighorn sheep, white-tailed deer, mule deer and pronghorn. There are several quality whitetail hunt packages available, as well as opportunities to pursue alligator , waterfowl, upland game birds, and exotics such as sable and gemsbok Hunters can buy Big Time Texas Hunts entries online for just $9 each at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/buyentry , or for $10 each at license retailers or by phone. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may purchase and all proceeds benefit conservation, wildlife management and public hunting. The program ismade possible with support from Toyota, Dallas Safari Club, Texas Trophy Hunters Association and the Texas Bighorn Society. More details on all seven premium hunts can be found online.

Lifetime License Drawing

Hunters and anglers can also take care of their licensing requirements for life with the purchase of an $1,800 Lifetime Super Combo, or you can enter for a chance at winning a lifetime license through a special drawing. Entries for the Lifetime License Drawing cost $5 each and may be purchased wherever licenses are sold. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be purchased. Winners will be drawn on Dec. 30, 2012 and June 30, 2013. If you enter by Dec. 27, 2012, you will be eligible for both drawings.

Mandatory Hunter Education Certification

Hunter Education Certification is also required of any hunter born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 and who is at least 17 years old. For hunters who are unable to work in a hunter education course before hunting season for whatever reason, TPWD does offer a deferral option that allows people 17 years of age or older a one-time only extension to complete the state’s hunter education requirements. The individual must first purchase a hunting license and then may purchase the deferral option #166. Hunters using the deferral must be accompanied by someone 17 years old or older also licensed to hunt in Texas. The accompanying individual must have completed hunter education or be exempt from the requirements (born before Sept. 2, 1971). The extension is good for one license year, by which time the person with the deferred option needs to complete a hunter education course. This option is not available to those who have ever received a conviction or deferred adjudication for lack of hunter education certification. They still must take the course before going afield. For information concerning the latest regulations and articles on hunting and fishing in Texas, check out the 2012-2013 Outdoor Annual available at license retailers and online at www.txoutdoorannual.com. The Outdoor Annualcan also be downloaded as a PDF.

Where to Hunt on Federal Land: Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado By: Scott Peters   Hunting is a favorite hobby of many enthusiasts. If you are like many other hunters, you are looking for new, unique, and exciting places to hunt. In this article, we will discuss different federal land areas that allow hunting. However, it is important to remember that each state has their own sets of rules and regulations when it comes to hunting on their land. This land is typically designated as a wildlife refuge therefore; there are many laws that protect certain species of animals. Here in this article, we will cover the areas of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Montana Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nineteen square miles of land or 12,383 acres. Located in the Great Plains, in Great Falls, Montana it is situated between Great Falls and the Rocky Mountains. The refuge, opened in 1961, provides a stopping ground for at least 199 different species of birds and other animals. Different weather seasons bring different types of birds. For example, in the winter it is not uncommon to see snowy owls, hawks, and chickadees. The Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge does allow hunting for upland birds and waterfowls. Specific areas are hunting areas and hunters are only allowed in these designated areas. Hunting is only allowed for species such as sharp-tailed grouse, ring-necked pheasants, gray partridge, tundra swans, mergansers, coots, geese, and ducks. You may not hunt for any other species of wildlife such as skunk, raccoon, fox, coyote, or rabbits. To hunt, you must only use non-toxic shots and respect all boundaries of the refuge. Wyoming In Wyoming, the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge is the federal land designated for protecting and providing habitat for several different species of animals. With 26,400 acres of land, it is accessible to the Green River. Established in 1965, the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge is not only home to many fabulous wildlife species, but also a very popular tourist attraction with more than 10,000 visitors each year. Early pioneers, fur trappers, and Indian tribes used this area long ago, which leaves a rich cultural and historic history. The Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge is home to at least 220 different bird species, as well as many mammals. Some species that can be seen at the refuge include ducks, sage grouse, bald eagles, trumpeter swans, moose, bobcat, mule deer, pronghorn, porcupine, and coyote. Hunting is allowed for waterfowl, sage grouse, mule deer, and antelope. Colorado The Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is located in Alamosa, Colorado. Located in the San Luis Valley, this refuge is wetlands that covers more than 11,000 acres of land. There are many different species of bird and wildlife available for viewing at the refuge. As with many other wildlife refuges, the birds and animals you see at any given time, depends on the time of year. Many species of birds visit at various times of the year, usually defined by the seasons, summer, spring, winter, and fall. To hunt at the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge you are required to have a hunting permit, this is issued by the state at various different locations. Aside from the permit, you will also have to have any licenses that are required at the state and federal level. If any stamps and validations are required, you should be sure to have those as well. You should make note that the Colorado law prohibits the use of any handguns or rifles. You may only use non-toxic shots to hunt and lead shots are illegal to possess or use during hunting. Hunting in every state is different and each state has their own specific rules and regulations. It is important to learn about these before you go hunting so you can be sure to abide and follow all rules and regulations. The internet can be a great sources for determining what is allowed and what is not in each area. Consult with the specific federal parks if you have any questions about their hours of operation, season opening, rules on weaponry, and ammunition. Most of all, enjoy your time hunting and enjoy the wildlife at the same time. While hunting may be your biggest love, you should take a moment to view all that nature has to offer while at any of these refuges as well. Each one has become a landmark for many different species of wildlife, some endangered and some threatened. Author Resource:-> Scott peters is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and Leupold scope dealer. Fly Fishing with Nymphs by Logan Chierotti - Expert Fly Fisher

Fly Fishing with Nymphs by Logan Chierotti - Expert Fly Fisher

By: Matthew McClifford

A nymph is a larval water phase of insects which have not so far attained adulthood. When fly fisherman use nymphing methods, they are really copying these types of aquatic bugs during its larval period which the major meal source of trout. All fishing is performed beneath the surface and not on the surface of the water as opposed to dry-fly fishing. Dry-fly fishing is confined fully to fishing on top of the water and several trout anglers will simply offer a fly to the trout on top of the water. Unfortunately, dry-fly fishing merely removes 90 % of trout fishing entirely because subsurface is the place where trout feast the most. Dry-fly fishing is incredibly enjoyable because the fisherman can certainly observe the trout actually grabbing the fly. Underneath the surface, trout are more refined as soon as bringing the fly, therefore the requirement for a strike indicator. Fly fishing nymphs raises the level of profitable time the angler may dedicate on the river given that dry-fly trout fishing can simply take part in generally when hatches will be developing about the river, though there are omissions for this principle. Throughout the spring and summer months when insects like grasshoppers tend to be taken into the river on breezy days and nights, trout will frequently eat them. Starting fly anglers, as soon as they understand the movement of the fly toss, will require a fundamental display that offers the ideal likelihood of hooking up, with ease in view. Waiting in the river the fisherman will cast upstream into the existing range. After the throw is done, the fishing line and fly will commence going downstream. To be able to give a natural display, the fisherman should concentrate on maintaining some slack from the line to keep the fly in the reach sector. If no slack is held in the line through the drift, the fly is going to be pulled up out of the reach sector and become taken over the surface producing small possibility of a hook-up because this is not really a normal motion of trout's water prey. Dry Fly fishing is a fantastic sports activity appreciated and enjoyed by many people who have identified the rush and excitement of utilizing a fly fishing rod to capture probably the most stunning fresh water classes. By making use of fly fishing nymphs tactics, the rookie fly fisherman raises his or her probability of finding and catching even more trout. "Fishing with Nymphs typically results in bigger fish, but the overall experience of fishing with dry flies you just can't beat." Says Logan Chierotti. Author Resource:-> Logan Chierotti is a Colorado outdoors man who enjoys fly fishing, Yoga, hiking and being outside.

Are You Ready For Another Civil Unrest Crisis?

By: Torie Williams   No one knows when we will see the next earthquake. The temporary unwinding of civilized society can occur instantaneously as we've seen recently in the Middle East and North Africa. These problems will need that you have the capacity to reside inside your home for not less than seventy two hours. But what if you had to stay indoors for a few days or 30 days? Although each home really should have various types of disaster readiness items, how many people possess an adequate amount of materials to carry on one or several months in case of an emergency? A lot of people keep extra kitchen items such as canned foods along with emergency lights, batteries, comforters, first aid kits, and other disaster necessities. But have you thought about food and water? Authorities state the fact that perhaps the most important items to own for the duration of an disaster are food items and drinking water. Of course, the important thing to making it through a longer term catastrophe scenario is to be prepared by possessing emergency food items and water. While other disaster supplies may be useful, we all will need food and drinking water to live. In the event that electricity is not available, drinking water will no longer flow to your home. The piping that carry normal water to your home could very well end up destroyed. Quite a few think during an disaster they could possibly try to acquire drinking water from a natural source such as a canal, creek or nearby reservoir, but that is presuming that drinking water supply has not been polluted during the disaster, or that it is even safe to move outside. You also simply cannot presume that you can acquire food during a crisis state of affairs. Food transports will not arrive at your neighborhood supermarket and quite possibly if you can hunt live game in your area, it will be very difficult to hunt when you have to fight with others who also are fighting for the same food sources. In the event you could hunt for animals in your locale, you nevertheless have to cleanly prepare and cook the animal. The best way to prepare for the next hurricane or civilization meltdown is to be prepared ahead of time by building up freeze dried food and water. When building your freeze dried food supplies, consider whether you must prepare for stay-in emergencies or mobile survival. The ideal choice is for one to prepare all conditions. For stay at home emergencies, you will need to have freeze dried food that is no hassle to prepare. Mountain House and AlpineAire are favorite freeze dried brands who sell food pouches and #10 cans. Cans have the benefit of a 25-30 year shelf life, meaning it will keep for up to twenty-five to thirty years depending on storage conditions. For mobile emergency, you need to consider buying MRE's (meal ready to eat) which you can have available for quick packing for a rapid escape if conditions require an exit from your location. Unfortunately, with MRE's is that it is heavier than freeze dried pouches or cans. The advantage is that MRE's taste much better. Be sure to purchase heaters along with your MRE's. Buying food for either scenario can challenge the pocketbook, so the best method to stock the necessary freeze dried food is to add incrementally every few weeks. A good approach is to set aside a percentage of your income each month. Consider your monthly purchase as insurance. As you progress in this plan, you has a greater supply of freeze dried food. While you are not ready purchase a complete 60-day supply of freeze dried food all at once, by doing it as you progress, you will have enough food to live off should you ever need it. So the action plan for you now is to look at what food items you presently own in your inventory and make an approach to add to it every month as a part of your crisis preparedness strategy. Do not forget to discuss with your family members your readiness plans. This involves what to do in the event of the an disaster, where to meet, what to get, and under what conditions you plan to stay inside scenarios or bug out. Being ready will bring you serenity, and with a little luck, should a disaster ever strike, being ready will keep you and your loved ones alive. Author Resource:-> The author is an avid prepper and backpacking. Torie has been known to enter local backpacking cookout competitions using different combinations of freeze dried food recipes. As such, Torie is also an expert on how to buy Mountain House freeze dried #10 cans and food pouches even when hey are out of stock.

Uses For Tactical Folding Knives

Uses For Tactical Folding Knives

By: Lazaro Cardenas   You are literally limited by your imagination when it comes to carrying your folding knives these days.Being able to open your tactical folder with one hand has made a big difference also. In the old days you needed both hands, one to hold the knife and the other to pull the blade out. Now one handed opening is the norm making it so much simpler and faster. The innovation of the thumb studs or hole in the blade has been a big success. If you find yourself in a position where you have only one hand available to open your knife, you are in luck. In the old days you could forget about it, you would never get it open or you could use your teeth to pull the blade out. Folding knife or fixed blade? These are generally the two types of knives. Many knives have taken on the name of the person or company that created them. For example, a "Bowie Knife" has been around for many, many years and is well known by its name and general characteristics. Jim Bowie of Alamo fame is credited with the creation of this knife, although some historians believe it may have actually been designed by his brother, Rezin. Knife makers give these knives various names, but they amount to little more than semantics. However, knives that have a particular name, such as the "Bowie" knife are also recognized by what they are used for. An example would be a hunting knife, fishing knife, or tactical knife.Folding KnifeFolding knives are often kept in pockets, and are often referred to as such. They are available in many different styles, and often include multiple blades for various uses. They make great tactical knives. A blade for everything. They are usually legal to carry as long as the blade is fairly small. Around two inches in most places. They are safer and more convenient than the fixed blades. Folding knives have a pivot point and typically have a lock mechanism, which allows the blade to close into the handle only when unlocked.Folding knives are naturally, by design, not as strong as fixed blade knives. They are a common general purpose tool and are used extensively for camping and hunting. They tend to be more compact and lighter, allowing them to be easily carried and concealed. The "Switchblade knife" is a spring-action knife, snap-blade knife, or any other knife having the appearance of a pocketknife. They typically have a blade two or more inches long that can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, or other mechanical action or device. So, a pocket knife without any type of "automatic release" would not be considered a "switchblade knife".The Butterfly Knife, also known as a gravity knife or balisong is typically illegal. They are designed to be deployed rapidly with a flipping action of the wrist, producing a slashing action. They are a folding knife that has two handles that rotate around its tang. They are opened by centrifugal force. Time to make a move to a new tactical rifle Rock River Arms AR-15 Model BB2522 Rock River Arms Operator 2 Rifle

By: Marvin Barnes   Recently, Rock River Arms released a new series of firearms. The Operator 2 line consists of 3 unique types of Rock River Arms respected direct-gas-operated LAR-15 style firearms. They all share some basic features, and the rifles take their name from the new Operator stock Rock River Arms has recently introduced. Rock River Arms started out building excellent 1911s, years before it was cool, the Corona, IL, company got into the AR-15 field. Its firearms were so well made that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency chose Rock River to produce its issue rifles available currently as the LAR-15 Pro-Series Government Model.Rock River Arms was launched 11 years ago by 2 brothers, Mark and Chuck Larson, who worked out of a garage. It has developed continuously ever since and now employs in excess of ninety folks. Even though Rock River produces rifles for numerous govt agencies, the particular majority of their product sales are to the civilian market place. Rock River Arms offers fifty or so designs of weapons, however customers can make up their very own configurations, using a great number of components substitutions - sights, rails, stocks, barrel length and contour, and more. Rock River will additionally include accessories like flashlights and red dot sights. Rock River Arms is like an a la carte workshop for guns. Rock River doesn’t make numerous components on site. Rock River designs and specifications components, then receive them, perform inspections, finish them, assemble them into rifles and ship them out. The Rock River Arms facility is complete with a buffing and blasting room, where raw forgings become completed parts. Rock River Arms is definitely a family business with the brothers Chuck and Mark Larson as well as their father and one of their sons working at the plant. Looking about the facility there were many boxes of rifle carrier groups, essentially the bolts of the rifles. Rock River Arms offers an almost countless number of chambering options for the basic AR platform. Once you own a lower half which consists of the stock and receiver, you can easily acquire upper halves (barrel, carrier group, and gas system) in all kinds of chambering and interchange them freely. There's even a company that offers a .410 shotgun upper half for the AR15 rifle.Components are measured and tested as they come in to the production facility and at various stages during production. Tested for hardness, testing is done all the way down to the flash hider. All of the little sub assemblies - sights, gas blocks, carrier groups, safeties, and so on -- come together at the stations where the upper halves and lower halves are put together. Once at a work station the gunsmith assembles the upper half of what will be a future complete rifle. The gunsmith takes special care to assemble the upper with the silver tube running along the top of the barrel which directs gas from the gas block to run the action. During the upper half assembly, the headspace gauges are used to examine the dimensions of the chamber. The bolt of a rifle should close over the green “go” gauge but not close over the red “no go,” which is slightly oversized. Cartridges can rupture, occasionally dangerously, in an oversized chamber. Rock River offers the choice of a standard trigger or a two-stage National Match trigger for serious target shooting. A two stage trigger is the preferred style for military rifle competitions such as the famous National Match at Camp Perry, Ohio. Pulling a two-stage trigger, you feel slack as the trigger moves a short distance, then a light, clean break. The Rock River Arms gunsmith will check the weight of the trigger pull by dangling a 4 1/ 2 pound weight from the trigger. If the weight doesn’t trip the trigger, he will file the trigger sear to lighten the pull. Lighter trigger pulls are also available from leading Rock River Arms dealers. Lowers also come with options such as an oversized winter trigger guard, originally designed for police officers who needed to keep their hands inside warm gloves but still be ready to shoot in cold weather. Winter trigger guards work perfectly for winter coyote hunters as well. As the final pieces are assembled into a lower half of what will be the final rifle, this lower half could also be matched to an endless combination of barrel lengths, barrel contour, hand-guards and calibers. As uppers and lowers are joined by a master gunsmith assembler, the firearms are tagged and prepared for the test fire phase of the product. The shipping area is a flurry of activity. Parts coming in and rifles going out. A literal symphony in action as the Rock River arms factory pushes in raw components destined to become full rifles. Bald Eagles and Alligators!

By: Bob Alexander   Most of the alligators scurried away with tails splashing and feet churning the shallow water to a muddy paste. I gingerly walked into the water and began wading around the grass, keeping an eye out for the gator 30 yards away that refused to leave his sunning spot. He was a mean looking one, lying on the surface about thirty yards from me; trying to stare me down. It worked! I wasn't about to get any closer to that huge alligator! He had to be at least 11-12 feet long! I am positive that I saw a smile on his face as he was daring me to come closer. If I hadn't needed bait, I wouldn't have gotten as close to him as I was. As long as he was on top of the water and I was moving away from him I felt relatively safe. Obviously I had taken leave of my senses! I was thrusting my bait net in and around the weed beds trying to catch tiny grass shrimp! The grass banks were full of them and I was bringing up several at a time. As a great bait for blue gill bream and red eared shell crackers, they were unbeatable! This was the first time I had been on Jessup Lake. While it was a fresh water lake, there was enough salt in it to support sting rays, tilapia and the occasional flounder as well. The wildlife here was something most fishermen rarely witness anywhere else. We had already seen at least a hundred alligators ranging from 4 feet long to 12 feet or more lazily capturing the morning sun. I know now that Lake Jessup has one of the largest alligator populations in Florida and the record for the state is about 13 and a half feet. As we got back in the boat with enough grass shrimp for the day, we saw a flock of about 20 white pelicans near the location of one of our shell cracker beds. They were apparently not concerned about us at all as they groomed their feathers with their beaks and chatted to each other in pelican language. Further down the shoreline we saw an egret's nest high in the top of an old cypress tree. Built in the fork of a limb, we could hear the chirps of young birds in the nest, even before we saw the mother flying in with a small fish in her beak. We could now see the baby egrets sticking their heads up above the rim of sticks and twigs as they were clamoring for food! Such a peaceful and serene sight! We watched for a while and were moving slowly with the trolling motor so as not to disturb the little family in the trees. Ron pulled the trolling motor up and we kept drifting until we could barely see the egrets. We were about to start the gasoline engine, when we saw a large bird about two hundred yards away swoop down and snatch a fish larger than I usually catch, from the water as if it were a minnow. It moved down the bank with its breakfast and settled in the top of a live oak tree. It wedged the fish into a natural cup of branches and commenced to eat. We had an idea of what the bird was, but it wasn't until we focused in the binoculars we'd use with the egrets that we knew exactly what we were seeing. It was a bald eagle that was staring back at us as we silently drifted past his tree! I've never seen anything as majestic as this great bird as he clamped one foot on the fish as he ate. He didn't seem to mind that we were watching him as we drifted down the lake. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera sufficient to capture that moment, but it's indelibly etched in my memory. We eventually made it to our bream beds and caught quite a few, but nothing was as exciting and memorable as that morning on Jessup Lake. What is the best safe for your handgun?

NewEzineArticles Directory | Free Articles | New Articles Daily Stats | What is the best safe for your handgun?

What is the best safe for your handgun?

By: John Raya   What is the best safe for your handgun? It is very important to keep your handgun safe and locked up at all times. There is a news story each year about a child who found a gun in their parent's bedroom and accidentally shot himself or herself or another sibling. It's a sad and terrible thing, but is something that can be prevented by locking your handguns in a gun safe or a special handgun safe. Most gun safes are made for larger rifles and shot guns, and can easily hold your extra handguns, but there are also smaller handgun safes that are meant to fit anywhere, and are great for safely storing a gun in your bedroom for quick and easy access, while keeping it locked to prevent an accident. But what is the Best Handgun Safe to buy? We've looked at a number of different handgun safes, comparing their main features and access methods, and have found that the Best Handgun Safe out there is the V-Line Pistol Safe. Access Method The primary reason that we've chosen the V-Line pistol safes over the fancy biometrics or electronic entry ones is because of V-Line's simple, mechanical access method, which makes them extremely reliable. The biometric pistol safes are neat, and a cool gadget, but from everything I've seen and common sense, the more fancy components and add-ons something has only means there are more things that can possibly go wrong. These safes also have to be battery powered, so in the rare circumstance that things get really bad, and batteries or power aren't available, you can't get to your gun if you need it. The V-Line has a simple 5 button and knob mechanical opening system that is both simple and reliable. You will never have to worry about battery levels, or if the electronics have a bug or glitch. Construction / Durability I personally own one of these safes, and my family has a few of them, and they are absolutely solid. They are constructed of fabricated steel and their case design is pry resistant. They definitely feel sturdy and solid all around, and will definitely stand the test of time. One thing I was surprised with was how heavy they were, but that just goes to show their quality and solid material that went into building it. Styles V-Line makes two main styles of pistol safes; the standard, top-opening one, and the hide-away or under mounted one. I own the standard, top-opening version, but have heard that both styles are absolutely great. You will have to pick the one that fits your situation the best. In the future, I will definitely be buying at least one under mounted safe. Bottom Line You absolutely need to keep your guns locked up, especially if your house is in a bad area, or you have children around, young or old. It would be a horrible thing if a young child got a hold of one of the guns. You would never be able to forgive yourself. The V-Line Pistol Safe is the Best Handgun Safe you can buy to lock up your handguns, and will be a reliable and solid safe in almost any condition and circumstance. It doesn't have any fancy electronics or fingerprint scanners, but that just means it will be more reliable and things won't go wrong when you absolutely need that gun. Rifle Cases Offer More Security And Durability

By: Rodney Greyling   Security and safety are a primary concern for gun owners. Children and guns are always a safety issue. All too often the news carries a story of a child that has been shot because the children were playing with an unsecured gun. Most of the time, these accidents are preventable. Proper security of the gun will stop the wrong hands from getting your gun. One option is to go out an purchase a metal gun safe. These are typically large enough to safely store multiple weapons. The weapons can be safely locked inside away from children. But many gun owners cannot afford these expensive safes. Unless you own multiple guns, this is an expense some owners are not willing to bear. Metal rifle cases can be used instead of an expensive safe. Metal rifle cases are designed to allow you to transport your weapon safely and securely. Their rugged outer shell and padded interiors make it possible to carry your rifle in very rugged areas without the gun becoming damaged. Even if the case is dropped, the content inside are kept safe from harm. One of the other great features on these cases is the ability to keep the contents locked safely away. By having a combination or key lock build right into the case you can lock the case and not have to worry about anyone getting to it. Without the combination or the key, there is no easy way to get the rifle out of the case. Most of the better quality cases have tamper proof latches. This means that thieves or curious children will not be able to get around the locks to get at the rifle inside. Cloth cases can be easily cut into to take your guns. Even plastic cases can be broken, but it is not as easy to get through a metal case. Breaking into a metal case is time consuming and requires tools. That makes it more trouble than it is worth for most people. Children especially are not likely to go through that much effort for the opportunity to play with your guns. A safe is still the most secure, but for owners of only one or two guns it is quite sufficient. It does give you the ability to keep your guns locked away and out of the hands of curious children, and leaving guns lying around unlocked should never be an option. If you don't already own a metal rifle case, now might be the right time to make that investment. It is a great way to keep your weapons safe and secure.
