The History Of Daisy Air Guns

daisy

Written by Charles Cundrum

Daisy air guns are one of those product names that just about everybody, even those who never picked one up, are familiar with. Daisy has probably the most colorful of all air gun histories invoking more nostalgia among particularly men of all ages who at some time in their lives have owned one of the multitude of Daisy air gun models. Daisy still makes air rifles today after a 130 year history. And their moderately priced and still highly popular guns are sold around the world. Daisy had numerous competitors in its early years including Matchless, Atlas and Markham among others. Many of the early air rifles from these various companies were crude with limited product lines. When Daisy air guns came on the scene, the company's high quality products and marketing savvy shot them quickly past their competitors. In fact, Daisy purchased one of their major competitors in 1928. Otherwise, Daisy's competitors from the early days faded away pretty quickly under the onslaught of the highly advanced products and marketing savvy of Daisy. National trends quickly became part of the company's trademark qualities as it caught on to America's gravitation toward companies that show that they care about the same thing mainstream USA cares about. From World War I through WWI Daisy air guns took on names and shapes of the military rifles of the day with campaigns following a theme of "future defenders" appealing to parents and kids who dreamed of defending their country from enemies, both domestic and foreign. Daisy also tied their name closely to American icons of the early days of America including US heroes and famous sports personality. From football players to golfers to tv and comic cowboys, famous names were attached to Daisy air guns. But the most famous cowboy of the 1930s to promote a Daisy product was the comic strip cowboy, Red Ryder. That name was launched with a new Daisy lever action air rifle in 1940 and became the top air rifle for the next 20 years. The Red Ryder remains in production in the 21st century and remains a popular bb gun still. While in modern times, paintball and air soft gun companies have cashed in on replicas of real firearms, Daisy was well ahead of its time in the 1960s when it began producing replicas of popular rifles such as the Winchester 94. Yet again, this line of innovative rifles and perceptive marketing drove Daisy to the top in yet another wave of popularity. In the late 60s and early 70s, Daisy began to produce higher power guns to be sure and keep their market share from competitors such as GAMO and Hammerli. Today, the history of Daisy air guns spans over 130 years. It remains one of the leading manufacturers of moderately priced air guns in the industry. And no matter who you talk to, when you mention the name Daisy, more likely than not, childhood memories of roaming the hills and woods with one of these guns is likely to be brought into the conversation. Because the company started and continues today to stay on the cutting edge of cultural trends and quality manufacturing methods, there's no reason that Daisy shouldn't be around for the next hundred years. How To Start A Fire Without Matches Or A Lighter

Written by Although once an essential skill, the ability to start a fire without matches or modern devices like cigarette lighters is all but lost. Nevertheless, anyone can learn how to do this and successfully start a fire in any weather. Fuel, oxygen and heat are the essential elements for fire. In this article, we'll especially consider your options for generating sufficient heat to ignite wood, since that is the most likely fuel you would be relying on in a survival situation. Without a flame from a match or lighter, how can you generate enough heat to start fire? First, you could use an old method the Indians used - rubbing sticks together. Well, it's a bit more involved than it sounds, but nevertheless, that's the idea. Friction between pieces of wood can in fact create a coal which can then be used to ignite tinder. The most common way to do this is with a drill or bow and drill combination. We'll look more closely at this method in a future article. Here's the bottom line - people who have learned to start a fire this way carry with them another method since they understand just how much work is involved in starting fire this way. So let's turn to another method - sparks. The right kind of steel can be useful to create enough sparks to light tinder. It can be a very small piece making it convenient to carry with you, ready for use at any time. One real benefit in the use of a fire steel is that if it's good quality, it will work even if it's wet. There are all kinds of them on the market, it just depends upon your favorite style. In closing, a quick word about tinder. There are many natural materials, such as bark shavings, dead moss gathered from trees, and dry grass. If you're serious enough about being skilled at fire starting that you're willing to carry a fire steel, you might also consider keeping a tiny container with tinder in it - such as cotton mixed with Vaseline. In any case, even with a fire striker, practice is essential to become skilled enough to be able to start a fire under any conditions.

Hogs Wild - Fighting The Feral Pig Problem

West Marine

WestMarine.com Boats have always had the power to inspire people. They have been the impetus behind countless songs, paintings, works of literature and early retirements. West Marine’s founder and chairman, Randy Repass took his passion for boating, channeled it into a prosperous business and revolutionized the way people shop for boating supplies. What has become the world’s largest boating supply retailer started modestly enough in a garage in Sunnyvale, CA. Mr. Repass saw an opportunity to improve the way people shopped for boating supplies. According to Mr. Repass, he was frustrated by the experience of shopping in local chandleries for the parts he needed to outfit his modest daysailer. “Boat supply stores in those days were usually dark, disorganized places staffed by a couple of salty, but indifferent clerks who preferred swapping sea stories with one another to helping customers find what they came in to buy.” In 1968 he began selling nylon rope by mail order under the name West Coast Ropes. Occasionally, adventuresome customers would even drop by to pick up their orders in person. “I decided from the beginning that I wanted to take care of people,” says Mr. Repass. “The high-tech industry I had been working in didn’t provide me with an effective way to do that. But the boating industry gave me the opportunity to really enjoy my work and interact with customers who shared my interests. I was having a blast and building a business at the same time.” The first West Coast Ropes store opened in Palo Alto, CA in 1975. Besides carrying the quality rope the business was built on, the original store stocked a small selection of basic boat supplies including anchors and fenders. Though the selection was meager at first, the service was outstanding. “We were, and continue to be, a company of boaters helping fellow boaters. From salespeople to top-level management, our associates are intimately familiar with the boating needs of our customers,” says Mr. Repass. “We believe that it’s just as important to offer knowledgeable service and support as it is to offer top-flight products.” As more and more customers discovered the store, they asked for a wider variety of products: antifouling paint, cleaners, electronics, safety equipment, foul weather gear and the like. The staff listened and the product line grew. In 1977, the company acquired some of the assets of Boston-based West Products, a well-known mail-order business, and changed its name from West Coast Ropes to West Marine Products to reflect its expanding selection. In 1978, West Marine introduced its own wholesale division, Port Supply. This allowed the company to sell products directly to boat yards, charter fleets, boat dealers and government agencies. Buoyed by the success of the first store, West Marine began adding others all over the West Coast, both through acquisition and expansion. By 1987, there were 15 stores with a growing assortment of marine products. To better represent West Marine’s growing product line, it was decided to present the Company’s entire selection in one comprehensive, easy-to-reference volume. In 1987, the Company introduced its first master catalog— 330 black-and-white pages packed with boating gear. In the fall of 1991, West Marine opened its first stores on the East Coast in Florida and Maryland. More stores followed in Virginia, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Then in 1993 the company went public under the symbol WMAR on the NASDAQ exchange. In 1996, West Marine merged with one of its oldest and most respected competitors; E&B Marine. West Marine marked another milestone in 2003, by acquiring the retail and catalog divisions of long-time competitor BoatU.S. Dynamic expansion continued and West Marine opened their first of five franchised stores in Istanbul, Turkey in 2008. West Marine opened the biggest boating store in the U.S. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2011. This 50,000 sq. ft. store, not only had an expanded selection of core boating products, but it offered a large selection of footwear, casual and technical apparel for those who enjoy being out and on the water. Customers’ responded positively to the larger store format where they could get everything they needed for a great day out on the water, in one location. Today, West Marine is the largest specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories, with over 300 stores located in 38 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. The company now carries more than 75,000 products, ranging from the rope that started it all, to the latest in marine electronics, technical apparel, footwear and accessories. In addition to its retail stores and Port Supply wholesale divisions, the company serves water lovers in more than 150 countries worldwide through its mail order and Internet divisions. Throughout the years, West Marine has continued to rely on outstanding customer service, selection and quality as its anchor and that’s been the secret of its success.
